ABOUT SUPERSTITIONS
Sakkie Parsons
Vertaal van Afrikaans: “Oor Bygelowe”
Someone asks me about ‘superstitions’ and I shortened the person’s question a bit.
“I would like to hear your opinion regarding believes of the blink of a left eye, or a right eye and then of course also the itching of a left or right hand and/or foot.
I also want to mention that we hear the saying: ‘good luck’ or ‘bad luck’. I never really believed in the stuff until I experienced it myself. When my left foot itches, I know by the time we’re going somewhere, we’ll be driving somewhere.
My left hand in some cases, not in all cases, then means that I will get money. Well as I say, not always, but in most cases, it works out like this.”
Here is how I look at this kind of thing:
This type of junk is popularly known as “superstitions.”
As far as I’m concerned, it shouldn’t even exist in the true Christian’s life. Because in a Christian’s life, it literally comes down to this:
It is a faith that he/she adds to his faith in Christ.
Or as we rightly say, it is a deceit, a belief that has been added to his/her faith in Christ.
If you go to an English dictionary you will read:
Definitions of superstition:
excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural.
Similar:
unfounded belief
credulity
magic
sorcery
witchcraft
fallacy
delusion
illusion
a widely held but irrational belief in supernatural influences, especially as leading to good or bad luck, or a practice based on such a belief.
plural noun: superstitions
“She touched her locket for luck, a superstition she’d had since childhood”
Similar:
myth
belief
old wives’ tale
notion
legend
I now want to share with you something about these “superstitions/delusions” in the person’s writing.
I would never, when my children were still in the house, sometimes for example, tell them that I was going to give them something and then gave it to them, and other times said that I was going to give it to them, and then didn’t do it.
In other words, with this nasty behaviour of mine towards them, lying, that they are looking forward to something they are not going to get.
For example, the person writes, and I highlight what you should pay special attention to with “()”.
” When my left foot itches, I know by the time we’re on our way somewhere, we’ll be driving somewhere.
My left hand (in some cases, not in all cases), then means that I will get money. (Well as I say, not always) but in (most cases it now works out like this).”
At least to think, or want to claim, that our Lord will give you a sign of, for example, money that you will get and then give it and then again on another occasion He will give you the same sign again and then would be so nasty to lie and not give it to you, is blasphemy to me.
I, a sinful person, will not even do this with my children and Jesus say on occasion:
Matthew 7:9-11
9Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will [instead] give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will [instead] give him a snake? 11If you then, evil (sinful by nature) as you are, know how to give good and advantageous gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven [perfect as He is] give what is good and advantageous to those who keep on asking Him.
Superstitions/delusions that people share with me always make me remember how cunning satan can be and then I usually remember cases that I have heard about or personally know about, like the following case that I experienced, and I know the people I am talking about very well
Years ago, there was a man and his wife who wanted a station wagon.
The woman was very excited by the thought and every evening when she came home, she told her husband that today our Lord showed her just the combi they had to buy.
She later called her husband more than once a day, because our Lord had just shown the combi they had to buy.
With great respect and tongue in cheek.
It seemed later, as if our Lord could not make up His “mind”, which combi they should now buy.
She was so obsessed with the idea of buying a station wagon, that without realizing it herself, wherever she drove, she looked for station wagons for sale and when she saw one, she thought that our Lord is the one who point it out to her.
This is also how it works with superstitions/delusions.
For example.
I have heard of the superstition, that if my hand itches, I will get money.
One day my hand itched and I received money.
Now I believe this is how it works, and because satan urges me to believe it and I listen to him and I forget about all the many, many times in the past, that I also got money, and my hand didn’t itch.
Remember child of God –
If satan see that you are receptive to this kind of rubbish, he will play with you with it, and he will try to play you with it – all the way to hell.
I, as a child of God, have the Holy Spirit living in me.
I don’t need all kinds of tricks or whatever from satan to guide me.
If I need to know, or to do, etc., my God’s Spirit that is in me, will see to it that I know, or do, etc., when I need to know, or do, what I need to know, or do, etc.
I just have to make sure that I keep my spiritual eyes and ears focused on our Lord.
JOHN 14:26 26But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.
Jesus ‘ followers only listen to One voice.
JOHN 10:27 27The sheep that are My own hear My voice and listen to Me; I know them, and they follow Me.
Let me and you when someone talks to us about “superstitions, we will call into our hearts the following advice from the Word:
COL 2:8-10
8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception [pseudo-intellectual babble], according to the tradition [and musings] of mere men, following the elementary principles of this world, rather than following [the truth—the teachings of] Christ. 9For in Him all the fullness of Deity (the Godhead) dwells in bodily form [completely expressing the divine essence of God]. 10And in Him you have been made complete [achieving spiritual stature through Christ], and He is the head over all rule and authority [of every angelic and earthly power].
Then just the following:
The person also mentions:
” I also want to casually mention that we hear talk about when it’s good or bad luck.”
For me, child of our Lord, there is no such thing as “good or bad luck,” or any other kind of “luck.”
I know that in the end, even if I don’t always understand everything that happens to me, everything works for my good and it is never “luck” of any kind.
Romans 8:28 28And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.
So, remember child of God –
If you start messing with any superstition/delusion – In other words if you add any other belief/superstition/delusion to your faith in Christ, then what you believe in, is no longer pure and true gospel of Christ – and the Word says of that type of belief:
Gal 1:8 8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we [originally] preached to you, let him be condemned to destruction!
Gal 1:9 9As we have said before, so I now say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel different from that which you received [from us], let him be condemned to destruction!
